FOREST 3 x 150 x 100 cm | Acryl | Jun 2025 Painting Proposal: "Forest" “Forest” is the first painting I created after arriving in the UAE, marking the beginning of my visual exploration of contrast, displacement, and adaptation. It represents a full recognition of the stark differences between the landscapes of my homeland and those I encountered in my new environment. The work is imbued with a quiet melancholy, reflecting the longing for rain, greenery, and natural spaces that I missed deeply during my first six months in the desert. Amidst the hyper-productive, mechanized, and at times intimidating urban growth of Dubai, I found solace in fragile, hopeful details. The painting’s delicate origami birds, flying over the imagined soul of a distant forest lake, serve as symbols of memory, resilience, and continuity — reminders of a world I had left behind, yet carry within me. “Forest” embodies a dialogue between inner and outer worlds: the tension between familiar, nurturing landscapes and the new, stark surroundings, between longing and acceptance. It captures the emotional process of adapting to a dramatically different environment while finding moments of hope, beauty, and quiet reflection in unexpected forms. Through this work, the viewer is invited to experience the personal yet universal experience of displacement, the bittersweet recognition of what is lost, and the small sparks of hope and renewal that allow the spirit to endure
Why collect this work?
Three adjoining canvases turn a forest into a layered field of interruptions: dark trunks arrest the view, while luminous horizontal bands make the landscape appear filtered through memory or reflection.
- The artist profile identifies Natasa Ilic as an architect. Here, the pronounced verticals, repeated bands and panoramic format connect that spatial training to an imagined natural environment.
- In the photograph, black tree forms divide saturated blues, and small red birds provide the sharpest contrast. Visible joins reinforce the catalogue’s description of a three-part painting, fragmenting an otherwise continuous scene.
- The documented acrylic-on-canvas medium can accommodate both opaque silhouettes and translucent-looking overlays. These differing passages keep water, vegetation and reflected light perceptually unresolved rather than strictly descriptive.
- The artist describes the 2025 work as her first painting after arriving in the UAE and associates it with displacement and remembered greenery. Its segmented landscape provides a concrete way to consider how recollection reorganizes place.
