FLYING HOUSE 150 x 200 cm | Acryl | Oct-Dec 2025 Painting Proposal: "Flying House" “Flying House” is a painting inspired by themes of movement, longing, and unattainable grounding, reflecting a lifelong preoccupation with the idea of home as both presence and ab sence. The visual motif of a house in flight was first sparked by the music video of Röyksopp’s “What Else Is There”, with its haunting, noctur nal imagery that left a lasting impression. The theme of the house floating, never fully land ing, has symbolized for me a life in constant mo tion, never fully here nor there, yearning for the stability of a “rock” to call home. This motif also resonates with early cinematic influences, particularly films by Emir Kusturica, whose works captured similar feelings of de tachment and perpetual movement. The image of the house with roots hanging, never reaching the ground, encapsulates a tension between attachment and displacement — a visual med itation on belonging, impermanence, and the search for grounding. In “Flying House”, the house becomes both a personal emblem and a universal metaphor: it represents the human experience of transience, aspiration, and the longing for a place to rest. The painting combines narrative and symbolic elements, inviting viewers to reflect on their own relationships with home, memory, and the constant interplay between movement and sta sis. This piece is both detached and evocative, translating an internal emotional landscape into a visual language where floating, suspend ed spaces confront the viewer with ideas of freedom, uncertainty, and the eternal search for stability
Why collect this work?
Three violet houses hover at different depths above water, with dark vertical strands stopping short of any ground. Against a storm-lit landscape, this repeated suspension turns the house from a sign of shelter into a structure defined by unresolved attachment.
- The artist profile identifies Natasa Ilic as an architect concerned with architecture, space, and imagination. That background clarifies the emphasis here on buildings whose familiar geometry remains legible even as ordinary structural logic is withdrawn.
- In the photograph, reeds establish a near foreground while the houses diminish diagonally toward the horizon. This convincing recession contrasts with their impossible footing, creating depth without secure location.
- The catalogued medium is acrylic on canvas. Here, opaque violet forms stand apart from softer-looking teal, green, and white passages, making the houses read as concentrated signs within an unsettled atmosphere.
- Catalogued at 150 by 200 cm, the painting gives substantial scale to a contradiction between dwelling and foundation. It can anchor discussion of home not as a fixed place, but as an architectural form held apart from settlement.
