Each arch is the moment before a decision, the door you cannot see beyond, the crossing you make anyway. Something chosen, something given. The arch is not a subject. It's a condition. It repeats across every canvas in grids and waves, each one a different colour, each asking the same question. I don't paint places or people or moments. I paint the space just before a decision, the point where one thing opens into another.
Why collect this work?
Thirty-six arch-like forms submit one motif to systematic variation: a rigid grid holds steady while changing colour relationships make each cell register as both an opening and a blocked plane.
- Nasr’s statement defines the recurring arch as the instant before a decision rather than as architecture. In No.58, repetition makes that proposed threshold less a singular event than a condition tested across many variations.
- Six rows and six columns establish an even visual beat. The rounded inner forms remain similarly scaled, while contrasting grounds alternately sharpen, soften, or nearly absorb their boundaries.
- Catalogued as oil pigment stick on canvas, the medium can support broad, direct applications of colour. In the photograph, minor contour variations keep the repeated geometry from looking mechanically uniform.
- At a catalogued 150 by 150 centimetres, the square format reinforces the grid’s self-contained logic. The work is particularly useful for considering how repetition can shift a simple sign between doorway, pictogram, and abstract colour unit.
