Each arch is the moment before a decision, the door you cannot see beyond, the crossing you make anyway. Something chosen, something given. The arch is not a subject. It's a condition. It repeats across every canvas in grids and waves, each one a different colour, each asking the same question. I don't paint places or people or moments. I paint the space just before a decision, the point where one thing opens into another.
Why collect this work?
No.53 turns one arch-like motif into a test of difference: a strict grid holds the painting together while abrupt colour changes and irregular marks prevent repetition from becoming uniform.
- Nasr describes the arch as the instant before a decision rather than as architecture. That intention clarifies the repeated form, although the painting’s effect also depends on the tension between orderly placement and unruly variation.
- In the photograph, six horizontal bands divide the canvas into compact fields. Each contains a rounded opening, yet overlaps, partial forms and contrasting grounds disrupt any simple left-to-right sequence.
- The documented oil pigment stick on canvas makes broad, saturated marking possible here. Dragged edges and passages where underlying colour remains visible give the grid a provisional character rather than the finish of a printed pattern.
- At 180 by 120 cm, this 2026 painting makes serial looking physical: the eye compares adjacent thresholds but cannot settle on a definitive version. Its curatorial interest lies in how constraint generates difference.
