Each arch is the moment before a decision, the door you cannot see beyond, the crossing you make anyway. Something chosen, something given. The arch is not a subject. It's a condition. It repeats across every canvas in grids and waves, each one a different colour, each asking the same question. I don't paint places or people or moments. I paint the space just before a decision, the point where one thing opens into another.
Why collect this work?
No.52 makes repetition feel unsettled: one rounded opening recurs across wave-like bands, while changes in scale, alignment and surrounding colour prevent the motif from settling into a stable pattern.
- Nasr describes the arch as the instant before a decision rather than as architecture. This stated intention helps frame the openings as thresholds, although the painting leaves what lies beyond them unresolved.
- In the photograph, stacked curving fields interrupt rows of upright arches. Loose alignments appear and then break apart, producing a downward, syncopated rhythm rather than a readable façade or landscape.
- Catalogue metadata identifies oil pigment stick on canvas. The medium supports broad, opaque-looking colour areas and direct boundaries here, while slight visible variation keeps the geometry from appearing mechanically uniform.
- At a catalogued 90 by 120 cm, many related forms can be compared at once. The work gives serial abstraction a narrative problem: if every opening suggests a choice, its altered setting makes repetition differ from return.
