*The Vanishing Trace* is a meditation on the fragility of memory and the fluidity of perception. The space of the painting resembles a dream: the forms of flowers dissolve into the twilight, while the animal remains appear not as a solid object, but rather as an elusive imprint of presence. Here, the skull serves not as a symbol of death, but as a sign of the dissolution of form - a moment of transition between the visible and the forgotten. The painting evokes that sensation when the boundaries between reality, memory, and the inner world become almost indistinguishable. Acrylic, oil pastel on canvas, 30*40 cm (11,8''*15,8'') Signed on the front and back by the artist. Stretched and ready to hang. A certificate of Authenticity signed and dated by the artist will be included in the package.
Why collect this work?
A low animal skull and high, dispersed flower heads share the same subdued field, making disappearance part of the landscape rather than a separate event.
- Viaznikova’s statement describes an interest in transitional states, where forms remain partly recognizable as they change. That intention helps frame the ambiguity here, but does not settle the skull’s meaning.
- In the photograph, tall stems divide the surface vertically while pale, broken contours connect flowers, grasses, and bone. The skull remains legible, yet its outline seems to merge with the surrounding growth.
- The catalogue identifies acrylic and oil pastel on canvas. These media can accommodate both broad tonal areas and direct linear accents, a contrast that appears in the reproduction’s hazy ground and sharper botanical marks.
- Placed beside landscape, still-life, or memento mori works, this painting can test where those categories meet: the remains function simultaneously as a focal object and as another form within the field.
