This painting reflects Afghanistan as a place shaped by centuries of movement, exchange, and conflict. I was inspired by the Silk Road and by the contrast between Afghanistan’s historical importance as a meeting point of cultures and the fragmented reality left by decades of war. I translated that tension into oil and geometric forms. Angular architecture, divided spaces, and contrasting fields of color suggest memories that have been broken apart but never erased. The layered surfaces and structured shapes create a sense of depth, movement, and instability. For me, the work is not simply about the past. It is about endurance, what remains when a place has been repeatedly reshaped by history. Beneath the fractures, there is still color, structure, and the possibility of renewal.
Why collect this work?
Silk Road sets rigid, brightly divided structures against softened mountains and circular bodies, presenting connection as a negotiation between competing spatial orders.
- Wardak says he rebuilds memories of Afghanistan through fragmented geometry rather than documenting conflict. That intention helps explain the scene’s combination of recognizable settlement and deliberately uncertain geography.
- In the photograph, dark window-like rectangles punctuate stacked facades, while a pale central opening recedes toward violet peaks. Overlapping walls and sloping landforms deny a continuous horizon, so distance must be pieced together from interruptions.
- The documented oil on canvas supports both crisply bounded colour planes and graduated shading on the mountains, cliffs, and spheres. These contrasting treatments distinguish architectural edges from more atmospheric forms while keeping both within one compressed field.
- Dated 2025, the painting is especially relevant to collections addressing how historical routes are reimagined through contemporary abstraction. It replaces cartographic clarity with layered obstructions, treating exchange as a structure shaped by rupture as well as continuity.
