Kabul Minaret Dreams reflects my memory of old Kabul, a city where architectural beauty was woven into everyday life. Its minarets, arches, stairways, and historic structures once gave the city a distinctive visual identity before decades of war transformed many of them into ruins. Rather than painting Kabul literally, I fragmented its architecture into geometric, dreamlike forms. I use oil on canvas to build depth, texture, and luminous layers, allowing the surface to feel simultaneously solid and remembered. The vivid colors preserve the warmth and beauty I associate with the city, while fractured forms suggest loss, destruction, and the passage of time. For me, the minarets represent cultural memory: they can be damaged, but they cannot easily be erased. I want collectors to encounter this work not simply as a painting of Kabul, but as a contemporary meditation on heritage, memory, and resilience a fragment of a city preserved through my imagination.
Why collect this work?
Across this imagined Kabul, openings promise access but disclose little: arches, windows, and passages become signs of a city remembered through partial visibility rather than recovered as a coherent place.
- Wardak states that he paints memories he cannot fully express in words. In this work, architectural motifs provide a vocabulary for recollection without functioning as a literal record of Kabul.
- The photograph shows dark apertures puncturing brightly coloured structures, while needle-like towers and hovering spheres disrupt any stable sense of scale. Built forms remain recognizable, but their relationships are deliberately uncertain.
- The documented oil medium can accommodate both opaque colour fields and gradual modelling. Here, softly shaded celestial forms appear rounded beside hard-edged buildings, sharpening the contrast between atmosphere and construction.
- Catalogued as a 2025 oil painting measuring 40 by 30 cm, it suits interpretation of urban heritage through memory rather than reconstruction. Its closed and displaced thresholds make access itself a question.
