This oil painting is a portrait of my nephew Ahmad and the quiet world he carries within him. I used a candle, vessel, doorway, mountains, and a solitary child to place his inner world beside the one we all recognize. The circular path connecting them represents his continuous journey between these two spaces. For me, the circle also means wholeness, Ahmad does not need to be changed to be complete. Through fragmented forms, symbolic objects, and layered oil paint, I wanted to capture his innocence, sensitivity, and the beauty of seeing the world differently.
Why collect this work?
The dominant ring organizes the painting but never resolves its divided setting, turning a portrait into a study of connection that preserves separation.
- Wardak states that fragmented geometric forms help him reconstruct memories. Here, that approach shifts attention from Ahmad’s appearance to a symbolic arrangement shaped by the artist’s familial perspective.
- The photograph shows a candle and vessel opposite a small standing child, with both figures anchored by narrow vertical forms. An orb above the child repeats the candle flame’s warm accent, linking otherwise unequal spaces.
- The documented oil-on-canvas medium permits both sharply bounded planes and gradual modelling. Those contrasting effects distinguish the governing geometry from the softer mountains, orb, vessel, and reflected silhouette.
- This painting supports discussion of portraiture made without facial likeness. Its title and the artist’s description identify Ahmad, while the constructed symbols reveal how any account of another person remains mediated by its maker.
