Hidden behind the veil, she does not hide she watches. Her eyes do not look: they pierce. She is silent, yet every golden stroke screams an ancient language only the soul can understand. It is not silence, it is a message. Not shadow, but restrained fire. The Eastern Mona does not seek to be understood, she chooses to be felt. Because sometimes, the most visible is that which chooses not to be seen.
Why collect this work?
A narrow band of vividly rendered eyes interrupts an all-over field of gold, black-edged signs, making visibility itself the painting’s central tension.
- Gonzalez describes colour as a language and does not separate painting from graffiti. Here, that position clarifies the collision between a carefully modelled gaze and emphatic, street-art-like marks without determining their meaning.
- In the photograph, looping forms overlap densely across the square support, while the uncovered eyes establish a sharp horizontal pause. Their direct gaze is exposed, yet the surrounding marks withhold the rest of the figure.
