Biography

Ekuma Kamzy, professionally known as Kamzy Nuel, is a self-taught lens-based visual artist living and working in Lagos, Nigeria. Though formally trained in science and engineering, his creative practice has always been driven by a natural affinity for art and visual expression. His artistic journey began way before 2020, but that was the year he began experimenting with photography using a smartphone. Over time, a growing fascination with classical art led him to transition into fine art photography in 2022. This shift marked the discovery of his distinctive portraiture style—one that blurs the boundaries between painting and photography, drawing heavily from the compositional poise of the Renaissance and the dramatic theatricality of the Baroque. Since then, Kamzy Nuel has remained committed to refining this visual language, continuously honing his craft while exploring timeless aesthetics through a contemporary lens.

Artist Statement

My style of work is heavily influence by the classic works of grandmasters. I like to consider my work a reinvention of the classics, a dialogue between classical motifs and modern day narratives. My work finds root in investigation into the human condition, concept of identity, vulnerability, and pure artistic inquiry. It maintains a sustained engagement with inner psychological states such as longings, grief, desire, and introspection. Broadly my practice can be understood as existing between the experienced and the inspired. Central to my practice is the investigation of the nude human form, approached not merely as a subject, but also a medium for storytelling and conceptualization. The treatement of nude figures in my work distances the body from realism and places it closer to an allegory.
