SUNFLOWER by JOJI Explore Mondoir Studio Medium: Charcoal on Fabriano 200 gsm sheet Dimensions: 62 x 82 cm Year: 2022 Price: $5000.00 USD Status: available Be an art ! yes, be an art that tastes like regret smells like ashes and burns vicious on their tongues. choke that nostalgia down the throats and let them drown in the insanity of their numbness. break the doors of their hearts wide open and make them see the regrets that live inside. bury them alive and dance on their graves; dance to the tune of their screams, dance till you don't have any blood left. be who you are and then burn brightly in that midnight darkness but disappear in the rising sun. Be an art! the kind of art that leaves destruction in its wake; a beautiful and macabre piece of work that will leave them panting for more. Why collect this work?An enlarged, tightly cropped face is interrupted by a flower at the cheek, making botanical ornament difficult to separate from obstruction or bodily transformation. Joji describes a charcoal and graphite practice that combines surrealism with hyperrealism. In this drawing, close facial modelling gives an improbable fusion enough visual coherence to remain ambiguous rather than merely illustrative. In the supplied image, one eye dominates while the nose and lips are cut by the sheet’s edges. Strands traverse the face and flower, binding both forms as the bloom conceals the cheek’s surface.Catalogued as charcoal on 200 gsm Fabriano paper, the work uses a medium capable of dense dark passages, soft tonal transitions and fine lines. These contrasts sharpen the tension between recognisable portrait and surreal alteration.Made in 2022 and titled SUNFLOWER, the work complicates the familiar pairing of face and flower. Its unresolved attachment concentrates attention on how portraiture can negotiate adornment, concealment and metamorphosis within a single image.
