Biography
Based in Germany, Jan-Luca Thomas is a self-taught painter whose practice centers on impressionistic acrylic works created with impasto techniques.
From an early age, painting was a natural form of expression for him. Coloured pencils and watercolours were not a pastime, but tools. As formal education shifted toward theory and away from practice, this direct engagement with material receded—without disappearing.
Creative discipline found other outlets: theatre work sharpened his sense for composition and presence; musical practice on viola, piano, and percussion refined his understanding of rhythm, structure, and tension; the cultivation of bonsai trees demanded patience, precision, and respect for process. These were not detours, but parallel developments. His professional path in marketing and design further refined his visual thinking and strategic clarity—skills that continue to inform his artistic practice.
The return to painting was not impulsive. The idea matured over years, repeatedly postponed by the demands of everyday life. It was the search for a work worthy of his own living space that ultimately reignited his commitment to the canvas. From that point on, painting became a constant rather than an occasional pursuit.
Today, his work is shown in regional exhibitions and has gained the attention of collectors across Germany and beyond. Each piece reflects a balance between control and intuition, design awareness and manual execution. His paintings are created to endure—visually, materially, and conceptually.
Artist Statement
My practice focuses on impressionistic acrylic paintings executed with palette knife techniques on medium- to large-scale canvases. The core of my work lies in capturing moments that convey a sense of stillness and suspended time — visual interpretations of pauses in daily life that encourage reflection and awareness.
I begin each piece with a sketched concept, drawing from a list of developed ideas. The painting process balances structured planning with intuitive decision-making, allowing for shifts in color palette and composition according to the emotional tone of the subject. My work ranges from monochromatic to vibrant color schemes, emphasizing atmosphere and mood over literal representation.
Influenced by artists such as Paul Kenton and Claude Monet, I explore the interplay between texture, light, and motion, using layered knife applications to create depth and movement within the surface.
