Created during the first lockdown of 2020, The Unexpected evokes the moment when someone - or something - takes you out of your mind loop, your inner maze.
Why collect this work?
By replacing the crown of a frontal portrait with a maze, this work turns repetitive thought into a literal enclosure, while leaving intervention poised between rescue and control.
- Jæn states that concept and aesthetics should operate together. Here, that aim is evident in the altered anatomy: the work’s central metaphor structures the figure rather than merely surrounding it.
- In the supplied image, an upper three-eyed head, an outstretched hand and a tiny suspended figure occupy the space above the open maze. Their sharp differences in scale make authority and dependence central, but the still does not establish movement or intention.
