“The Call” began in the fragile stillness of early morning, when the world feels suspended between sleep and waking. I wanted to hold that private moment when a ringing phone, a voice, or a sudden thought can interrupt the quiet and change the emotional direction of an entire day. The figure bends into the call, enclosed by soft grays, muted greens, and pale pinks that carry the cool, uncertain light of dawn. I worked in acrylic on paper with visible, searching marks, allowing the surface to feel immediate and unsettled. The dark shapes gather around the figure like lingering shadows of sleep, while the warm brown diagonal introduces movement and urgency. A small touch of yellow becomes a point of attention, suggesting a message, a memory, or the first spark of awareness. I hope this painting recalls the intimacy of mornings before the day has fully formed. For me, it is about listening closely, not only to another person, but also to the inner call that arrives when everything around us is quiet enough to hear it.
Why collect this work?
A forceful brown diagonal compresses an already cropped figure, making the titled call register less as a described event than as a moment of interruption.
- The artist profile identifies everyday intimacy as a recurring concern in Ajvazi’s figurative practice. Here, narrative is concentrated in posture and spatial pressure rather than a clearly legible setting.
- In the photograph, black shapes gather around the bowed head and raised hand, while gray, pink and green passages overlap uncertainly. A small yellow accent focuses attention without clarifying what has occurred.
- The documented acrylic on paper permits broad, opaque shapes to coexist with exposed linear marks. That tension keeps the figure partly readable and partly absorbed into the surrounding field.
- The work provides a focused case for examining how contemporary figuration can carry narrative through cropping, directional force and withheld facial expression, while leaving the title to supply the incident.
