“The Appointment” began with the feeling of waiting for something that may change us. I imagined a quiet meeting between instinct and uncertainty, a moment when the familiar world pauses and an inner voice asks to be heard. The bird’s lowered gaze holds that tension for me: watchful, self-contained, and carrying a message it has not yet revealed. I used acrylic on wood panel to build a surface that feels both direct and vulnerable. The deep brown and black body creates a protective weight, while the vivid red at the side breaks through like a pulse, a wound, or a sudden memory. Against the muted grey-green and pale blue surroundings, the warm peach of the beak becomes a tender point of focus. The simplified forms and visible brushwork preserve the immediacy of the encounter, as though the image has arrived before it can be fully explained. I hope this painting invites viewers to consider the appointments we make with ourselves: the moments we can no longer postpone, when stillness becomes a form of courage and listening becomes the beginning of change.
Why collect this work?
A tightly cropped bird profile makes waiting feel less like narrative suspense than a conflict between guarded mass and exposed colour.
- The artist profile describes Irfan Ajvazi as a figurative painter concerned with intimate moments and unspoken narratives. Here, that interest is concentrated in a single lowered head rather than a fully staged scene.
- In the photograph, the dark body fills most of the panel, while a red side-form, peach beak and pale ground interrupt its visual weight. The lowered gaze and compressed framing withhold any clear event, making the title’s “appointment” seem inward or unresolved.
- Catalogued as acrylic on wood panel, the medium permits broad opaque shapes and sharp shifts between muted and saturated passages. The photographed surface also shows irregular transitions that keep the simplified silhouette from becoming purely graphic.
- The artist states that the bird carries an unrevealed message and links the image to self-confrontation. Encountered as contemporary animal portraiture, the painting tests how little narrative information is needed for a creature to function as an allegorical figure.
