Ghazi Sikander Mirza Explore Mondoir Studio Nationality: Pakistani Born: 1991 Artistic discipline: painting/drawing Based in: Lahore, PK BiographyGhazi Sikander Mirza is a Lahore-based visual artist whose practice spans painting, drawing and installation. He received his BFA in Painting from the National College of Arts, Lahore, in 2017 and his MFA in Fine Arts from Parsons School of Design, New York, in 2023. His practice developed through an enduring fascination with people in collective spaces: religious processions, public transport, traffic, streets and the compressed environments of contemporary cities. Working from photographs gathered during his own encounters and journeys, Mirza reconstructs observed reality through drawing, painting and collage, often introducing mythological or imagined elements into otherwise familiar scenes. His work has been exhibited in Pakistan and internationally, including solo exhibitions in Karachi and Tehran, and his practice has continued to develop through travel, teaching and artist residencies. Artist StatementMy work examines crowds, movement, memory and the psychological experience of occupying shared spaces. I photograph religious processions, commuters, traffic and everyday encounters, then combine multiple photographs to construct compositions that exist somewhere between documentation and fiction. Two interconnected ideas increasingly shape my practice. Dragonisation emerges through traffic and urban movement, where ordinary vehicles, bodies and architecture acquire an almost mythological presence. Azerkeel, an eyeless fictional angel, emerges from my sustained engagement with the 9th Muharram procession in Lahore. Azerkeel does not see; it feels its way through bodies, space and circumstance, becoming a means of exploring agency, passage and transformation. Through ballpoint pen, oil paint, acrylic marker and transparent surfaces, I build densely populated images in which the everyday can become strange, monumental or supernatural. I am interested in the moment when observation stops being documentation and begins to construct its own mythology.
