Light Skin / Dark Skin Two parallel series celebrating the diversity of the human body through the language of sacred geometry. Each work begins as a studio photograph, then is transformed using the Body Mandala technique: the figure is precisely mirrored and rotated into a symmetrical, mandala-like structure where anatomy becomes pattern and presence becomes architecture. Light Skin and Dark Skin explore variations of body type, shape, ethnicity, and skin tone—revealing how different forms carry light, texture, and contrast in distinct ways while remaining part of the same universal geometry. Together, the series honors individuality and shared harmony, turning the body into a timeless, meditative composition.
Why collect this work?
A radial arrangement converts photographed arms and open hands into a tightly ordered figure, yet the varied gestures at its perimeter keep bodily difference legible within the symmetry.
- Bianchi’s profile traces his practice from music and audiovisual production, where rhythm, repetition, and sequencing shaped his approach. Those concerns clarify the serial construction visible here without reducing the image to biography.
- In the photograph, overlapping forearms converge on a dark central polygon while hands flare outward against an open ground. The eye shifts between a single geometric unit and many distinct extremities, making order appear assembled rather than given.
- Catalogued as an archival pigment print on metallic paper, the work uses mirrored and rotated studio photography, according to its description. Repetition suppresses any complete portrait, while photographic tonal variation preserves traces of skin, joints, and fingernails.
- At 101.6 centimetres square, this 2016 print is a focused case for considering how photographic bodies can be standardized into ornament while retaining small signs of individual gesture.
