We do not bloom all at once. There are seasons when we are hidden beneath the soil of expectation, fear, memory, and hope. Yet even in silence, growth is taking place. This series explores the journey of becoming—the gradual unfolding of self, the courage to occupy space, and the beauty that emerges when one chooses authenticity over approval. The face wears flower not as decoration, but as extensions of their being. The petals become crowns, shields, and voices for the parts of themselves that words cannot always express. Each bloom tells a story of transformation: of a person learning to embrace their complexity, their heritage, their tenderness, and their power. In this work, becoming is not a destination. It is a continuous act of unfolding.
Why collect this work?
A face fused with an oversized blue flower forms a single frontal presence, making growth appear less like a private process than a visible claim to space.
- Gbadero describes becoming as gradual self-definition shaped by identity, memory and collective experience. That stated concern helps explain the merger of person and bloom, though the painting leaves its meaning open beyond this intention.
- In the photograph, six broad petals radiate around the centrally placed head. The direct gaze holds against their outward expansion, while red earrings connect the face to the warm patterned clothing and orange-red background.
- The catalogue records oil and acrylic on canvas. This mixed medium can accommodate both broad areas and finer modelling, but the photograph does not establish which paint produced particular passages or reveal the physical surface precisely.
- At a documented 29 by 36 inches, the work brings portrait scale to a floral structure. It is significant to encounter as a painting in which adornment, protection and bodily presence remain deliberately difficult to separate.
