We do not bloom all at once. There are seasons when we are hidden beneath the soil of expectation, fear, memory, and hope. Yet even in silence, growth is taking place. This series explores the journey of becoming—the gradual unfolding of self, the courage to occupy space, and the beauty that emerges when one chooses authenticity over approval. The face wears flower not as decoration, but as extensions of their being. The petals become crowns, shields, and voices for the parts of themselves that words cannot always express. Each bloom tells a story of transformation: of a person learning to embrace their complexity, their heritage, their tenderness, and their power. In this work, becoming is not a destination. It is a continuous act of unfolding.
Why collect this work?
A frontal head occupies the flower’s centre, binding portrait and bloom into a single figure whose scale makes becoming appear less like private change than a claim to visibility.
- Gbadero states that his practice explores identity, memory and becoming. Here, those concerns are compressed into one symbolic fusion rather than narrated through a broader scene.
- In the supplied photograph, five yellow-orange petals radiate around the face and run beyond the composition’s edges. The upward gaze, paired hair knots and pendant earrings establish a measured symmetry within the expanding floral form.
- Catalogued as oil and acrylic on canvas, the work sets broad blue and yellow areas against more graduated facial modelling. These media can accommodate both opaque colour fields and layered tonal transitions, though the photograph cannot confirm their precise handling.
- Dated 2026 and titled Petals of Becoming I, the painting provides a focused case for considering how contemporary portraiture can merge likeness, clothing and botanical form without fixing where adornment ends and identity begins.
