Beneath the weight of unmoving air, he remains seated. Still. As if standing would require a life he no longer owns. On the table rests her eyes not glass, not ink, but memory frozen into an image. They look at him the way they once did, when silence hadn’t learned his name yet. He does not touch the blade. He only knows it is there. Like a thought that never leaves, only learns how to whisper. The rope waits without impatience. Death, at least, does not rush him. It understands hesitation understands love. Behind the mask, breath is shallow, not from fear, but from exhaustion. From carrying absence as if it were a body. He wonders if disappearing would finally quiet the sound of her gaze inside his chest, or if even oblivion would remember her eyes. This is not a decision. This is the long moment before one when living and leaving feel equally heavy. And so he sits, between the memory of being loved and the temptation of being nothing at all.
