I created “I Found Light” from the belief that even the most difficult storms eventually begin to loosen their hold. It reflects that fragile moment when darkness has not fully passed, yet a small opening appears and hope quietly returns. I built the surface in layers of charcoal, ash, earth, and muted blue-green, allowing the marks to collide, disappear, and rise again. The rough textures carry the weight and confusion of hardship, while the sweeping gestures suggest movement through it. At the center, a warm golden passage breaks through the surrounding shadows. I wanted this light to feel earned rather than effortless, like courage discovered only after moving through uncertainty. The pale strokes across the canvas are traces of clearing skies, breath, and the first sense of possibility. This painting is deeply personal, but I hope it leaves room for each viewer’s own story. I want “I Found Light” to offer a quiet reassurance: the storm may change us, but it does not have the final word. Somewhere within the darkness, light is already finding its way in.
Why collect this work?
A narrow ochre diagonal presses through compressed dark and pale masses, presenting light not as open clarity but as a contested breach.
- The artist describes a practice concerned with weather, light, and seasonal change rather than specific locations. Here, that intention supports an atmospheric reading while leaving the forms unresolved.
- In the photograph, broad overlapping fields meet white streaks and a curved, striped form at upper right. Their conflicting directions sustain tension around the more decisive central diagonal.
- Catalogued as acrylic on canvas, the painting uses the medium’s capacity for opaque coverage, thinner veils, and broken marks. Layering makes concealment and reappearance part of the composition.
- The work provides a focused case for considering how a title and one concentrated band of warm colour can steer abstraction toward a storm-clearing narrative without turning its marks into literal scenery.
