Prayer by Bahman Zahedi Explore Mondoir Studio Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 100 x 100 cm Year: 2023 Price: $5500.00 USD Status: available In this work, pairs a contemporary prayer with a visual language inspired by ancient Iranian sensibilities. The text—an imagined invocation before sleep—evokes a passage between day and night, truth and illusion, vigilance and surrender. By embedding this poetic fragment within the artwork, the piece becomes a quiet ritual rather than a purely formal composition. The visual dualities echo the ethical and spiritual tension of the prayer, creating a space where personal stillness and collective aspiration briefly meet. Why collect this work?Prayer compresses an imagined bedtime invocation into a tightly wound emblem, making spiritual transition appear less like release than a disciplined negotiation between opposing states. Zahedi describes his practice as deconstructing calligraphic forms until writing becomes movement and rhythm. Here, that stated aim clarifies the text-like marks, although the photograph does not establish whether they remain legible.A large divided circle dominates the square format. Nested, teardrop-shaped bands turn in opposite directions, while the striped lower field seems to carry their curvature beyond the emblem, setting containment against outward continuation.Catalogued as oil on canvas, the medium permits opaque tonal contrasts and sharply separated bands. These distinctions organize the dense internal markings without requiring them to function as readable script. The artist’s description identifies the embedded text as an imagined prayer before sleep. Encountering this work allows consideration of how devotional language can retain ritual force after its words become difficult to decipher.
