Baber Afzal Explore Mondoir Studio Nationality: Pakistani Born: 1983 Artistic discipline: Fine Art Photography Based in: Dubai, AE BiographyBaber Afzal is a Dubai-based visual artist and fine art photographer whose work explores the relationship between landscape, architecture, atmosphere and the passage of time. Working across photography and contemporary image-making, his practice often transforms familiar environments into quieter, more surreal spaces through dramatic weather, light and scale. Dubai has remained a recurring subject throughout his career, resulting in an extensive visual archive documenting a city and surrounding landscape in constant transformation. Over a career spanning more than 15 years, Afzal's work has received international recognition from the International Photography Awards and One Eyeland, and has been featured by CNN, The National, PetaPixel and Fstoppers. In 2024, he was invited by Apple to lead a Today at Apple photography session at Apple Al Maryah Island in Abu Dhabi. His work has also been exhibited internationally, including presentations in New York, Liverpool and Los Angeles, alongside a solo exhibition in Dubai. Artist StatementMy work begins with a fascination for places in transition. I am drawn to moments when light, weather and atmosphere temporarily transform a familiar landscape into something that feels almost imagined. Photography allows me to explore the space between documentation and interpretation. Architecture, mountains, deserts and cities become subjects through which I examine scale, solitude, time and our relationship with the environments we inhabit. While my images are rooted in real places, I am less interested in reproducing what the eye sees than in expressing what a place can feel like. Dubai has played a particularly important role in this practice. I have photographed the city and its surrounding landscapes for more than fifteen years, witnessing skylines emerge, viewpoints disappear and desert environments gradually change. Some of these photographs have therefore taken on another dimension with time: they are not only interpretations of a place, but records of moments that can no longer be recreated. Across my work, I seek that delicate balance where the real begins to feel unfamiliar, while still remaining believable.
