Why collect this work?A dense field of improvised-looking signs is held together by a few emphatic colour masses, turning visual disorder into a study of how marks begin to resemble language. Rivas states that cheerful themes, vibrant colour and innocence serve his aim of giving viewers some joy. Here, the smiling sun supports that intention, while the sharper black notations keep the mood from becoming merely carefree. The photograph shows a red, irregular central body interrupted by a yellow burst, with blue and ochre blocks pressing in from the edges. Eyes, hands, lines and tally-like strokes hover between recognisable figures and unreadable script.Catalogued as acrylic on canvas, the medium permits opaque white ground, saturated flat shapes and quick linear marks to coexist. The catalogue also reports textured areas, although their physical character cannot be confirmed from the photograph. The title, WE ARE ALL MIRÓ, frames this mixture of biomorphic forms and pictographic marks as an overt act of artistic quotation. It is particularly useful for considering when homage becomes a shared visual vocabulary rather than imitation. About the ArtistAngel Rivas Angel Rivas is an artist on Mondoir Studio.
