Zebras by Alina O'Dwyer Explore Mondoir Studio Medium: acrylic on a canvas Dimensions: 50 x 70 cm Year: 2022 Price: $890.00 USD Status: available Zebras is a colourful painting featuring three zebras adorned in a diverse array of colours. Through this artwork, I aim to illustrate the notion that our perception of the world transcends mere black-and-white dichotomies — much like the familiar depiction of zebras themselves. Our inner world and imaginative faculties play a pivotal role in shaping how we perceive reality, often transforming the mundane into the extraordinary. This painting serves a purpose beyond aesthetics alone; it seeks to imbue ordinary subjects with newfound colour and life, thereby enriching both living spaces and the lives within them. By challenging conventional perspectives and inviting viewers to embrace a kaleidoscope of possibilities, my work endeavours to expand horizons and bring joy into everyday existence. Why collect this work? Two visible zebra heads overlap a broad yellow form, while substituted stripe colours preserve recognition and unsettle the animal’s familiar black-and-white identity. O’Dwyer states that imagination can move perception beyond binary categories. The altered markings make that intention legible here without turning the zebras into a fixed allegory. The orange head dominates the upper field; a smaller magenta head rises diagonally across it. Their close cropping compresses separate animals into a layered arrangement whose boundaries remain readable through contrasting stripes.Catalogued as acrylic on canvas, the medium can support the opaque red, orange, yellow and purple passages seen in the photograph. Directional brushmarks differentiate manes, faces and stripes without naturalistic modelling.Painted in 2022 and measuring 50 by 70 centimetres, Zebras is a focused study of how far colour can depart from expectation while outline, pattern and overlap continue to identify animal bodies.
