Biography
Afsaneh Moslehi (b. 1989, Babol, Iran) is a contemporary calligraphy and mirror art artist based in Oman since 2021. She holds a Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering and has developed her artistic practice through a self-directed path. Her journey into art began through teaching calligraphy, where early recognition of her skill led her to pursue the medium more deeply and eventually transition into a full-time artistic practice. With over a decade of experience, her work engages with traditional visual languages through a contemporary lens, focusing on the interplay of script, geometry, and reflection. Drawing from cultural memory and the visual heritage of the region, she creates works that reinterpret established forms with precision and material sensitivity.Artist Statement
My work explores the relationship between nature, geometry, and human expression. I am particularly drawn to the geometric patterns found across Middle Eastern and Islamic architecture—forms rooted in natural systems that have been translated into structured, rhythmic compositions. In my practice, I approach these patterns as living visual languages rather than static ornamentation. By integrating calligraphy into geometric frameworks, I transform script into structure—where text becomes movement, rhythm, and spatial presence. In selected works, I further extend this dialogue through a contemporary interpretation of illumination (tazhib). Rather than adhering to its traditional intricacy, I translate its essence—light, vitality, and growth—into larger-scale compositions, allowing it to interact more freely with form and space. Through this process, I aim to create a dialogue between heritage and contemporary expression, bringing together geometry, calligraphy, and light into a unified visual language that reflects both cultural continuity and transformation.Exhibitions
